The Bengals haven't finished in the top 10 in total defense since 2001, but going into Sunday's regular-season finale against the New York Jets they have the chance to finish with their first top-five ranking since they led the league in 1983.
This despite having three starters on injured reserve and having five backups in the lineup last week in their 17-10 win over Kansas City. Despite having to go with a patchwork defense over the past couple weeks, defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is expecting better of his unit, especially with the stakes becoming bigger.
"We can't play like that and win anything in the playoffs," Zimmer said of last week's game. "We made too many mistakes all over.
